RAW Design Build

What could be better than studying architecture in the South of France this summer? Join us June 4-22, 2012, for Provence 2012, a 3-week design studio in Aix en Provence, France. Voted “the most desired French town to live in,” and nick-named the “Town of Water,” Aix's numerous fountains, narrow winding streets, and 17th and 18th century architecture provide a rich and inspiring foundation for exploring and developing design intuition. 

Provence 2012 is a 3-credit studio offered in partnership with the Institute for American Universities (IAU), one of the oldest and largest education abroad programs in Europe, and the Marchutz School of Art . The studio will take place at Marchutz, just outside of Aix, on the famous and now protected “route de Cezanne.” Founded 40 years ago by French artist Leo Marchutz, the school is internationally known for its interdisciplinary and holistic approach to art education. It’s main studio building was designed by the French architect Fernand Pouillon.

Like all RAW workshops, Provence 2012 is an intensive design studio that investigates the experiential qualities of architecture. Immersed in the rich architectural, artistic and cultural traditions of Aix, Marchutz, and the surrounding environs, students will explore and develop architectural intuition and their personal, authentic approach to design. Working at multiple scales, students will gain a broad understanding of the historically rich context of Provence, while focusing on the specifics of design at the material level.  

Studio exercises include active investigation of Aix and the Marchutz campus, conceptual design, and on-site, full scale modeling of design solutions. Excursions to  area landmarks, including Sénanque, a 12th century Cistercian Monastery, and the Cathedral St. Sauveur, a monument of 1500 years of architectural design history (300AD – 1800AD), are included.

Fee: $3,670 (includes tuition, homestay, excursions, activities) The workshop IS OFFERED AS A STAND ALONE 3 CREDIT STUDIO THROUGH IAU ONLY WHEN APPLIED FOR THROUGH RAW. (May be taken in conjunction with other 2012 IAU summer course offerings for additional credit/cost as well.)
